"Picking a place to visit is never easy and always exciting, because planning a trip is part of the adventure."

with the re-release of our bestselling “Venice” floor lamp, this is the perfect time to shed some light on how we plan our travels. Hopefully it sparks your desire to start exploring the possibilities for your next vacation.

Traveling to Venice is like visiting a museum, with its beautiful bridges, cathedrals, palaces, and statues on full display. But it's no ordinary museum, where a collection of objects are presented to you. It’s more wild. Somewhere you can explore. In some ways traveling to Venice feels more like visiting an archeological site. A place preserved by time and open to discovery.

So when you visit, take the Archiologist approach. Don’t just look at a building as an object. Dig deeper. Try shining a light on the context around its creation. Learn about the people and culture behind it. Find out what they had to destroy to build it.

Venice is an exhibition of colliding cultures, booming economies, destructive invasions, and also drop-dead gorgeous architecture. At its best, walking through the streets of Venice feels like taking a stroll through time. All you need is a map, a childlike curiosity, and a nudge in the right direction and your path will illuminate itself.

Where to start? There’s no entrance or exit to Venice. No taxi taking you from point a to point b. You get to experience the city as the Venetians did 1,000 years ago, via the gondola. Travel through time as you glide freely through the canals.

Gaze up at the graceful gothic style of the Ca’d’Oro palace, with its intricate arches becoming more complex and delicate as they rise from one level to the next. We clearly love arches. And the popularity of our Venice floor lamp shows we’re not the only ones.

Like the lamp, the gorgeous Venetian gothic architecture is known for its lightness and elegance. Perhaps they were aware of not building things too heavy… Or Venice might actually be an archeological site.

The palace overlooks the grand canal, almost like it would a boulevard, leaving you with a dreamy impression as the gondolier pulls you through the waterway. The same waterway where over 10,000 gondolas would ferry passengers at the time the palace was built.

In the way of the Archiologist, you often start with a plan, but it's the surprising detours where discoveries are made. So be sure to have your gondolier drop you off somewhere unexpected.

Then later on spend your afternoon wandering the streets of Cannaregio, a quiet neighborhood where the locals live. If you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of a modern-day Venetian. They’re sometimes found in the back streets, gathered around a few makeshift tables while sharing laughter and wine with their neighbors.

Once the sun sets you will discover the beauty of being in a city without the loud sound of traffic or the bright lights of cars. The pathways are lit by street lamps that extend overhead from the same buildings where oil lanterns would hang in the 18th century. You’re in the perfect area to find a lively pub or more intimate wine bar. But they’re not all clearly marked. Which brings a new challenge. If you find the right person, they might take you to the local spot whose entrance is an antique wooden door and whose name is barely lit by the golden glow of a lamp hanging above it. Knock three times and be ready to delve deeper.
